Internet Desk: Just about four months ago World football mourned in angony as Brazilian club Chapecoense had a terrible disaster and 19 Chapecoense players were among the 71 people killed when a plane carrying 77 passengers crashed in Colombia. The club and Atletico Nacional took on each other in an emotional first leg of the Recopa Sudamericana on Tuesday, exactly  after four months after the calamity which dashed the Brazilian side ahead of their last meeting.

Jounalists and club officials also died as disaster struck while the team travelled to face Atletico in the Copa Sudamericana final in November.

The Recopa is a clash between the winners of the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana. Atletico Nacional won the Libertadores and requested Chapecoense be awarded the Copa Sudamericana title in the wake of the crash.

Chapecoense won the match 2-1 and to mark the occasion, the Brazilian city — which has around 200,000 residents — held an emotional ceremony and declared a municipal holiday.

Celebrations were held in the city centre before fans marched to the club's stadium, the Arena Cona. Special videos were shown during half-time, with fireworks due to be let off after the final whistle.

A time capsule will also be set aside to be opened in 43 years – the present age of the Brazilian club.

Last week members of the Japan FA met with officials from Chapecoense to offer support to the club, who have been holding their own since rebuilding their team.

They lead their state championship have taken three points from their first two Copa Libertadores matches.

The return leg of the Recopa Sudamericana will take place in Medellin on May 10.
