Image Source: XtraTime[/caption]Internet Desk: As always on the eve of republic day, the notable awardees for the prestigious Padma shri award has been announced, which contains the names like Virat Kohli, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar, PR Sreejesh, Vikash Gowda, Thangvellu Mariyappan in the respective sports sections.
Indian batting sensation Virat Kohli got the prize of successfully leading the test team since 2014 as he got full time captaincy in early 2017 after MS Dhoni relinquished the post. He went on to lead the side victorious as the hosts beat England 2-1.
Sakshi Malik captured the Bronze medal in the Rio Olympics last year as she became the fourth female athlete and first female wrestler to win the elusive metal,through repechage round.
PR Sreejesh led the Indian team to a successful 2016 Hockey Champions Trophy campaign, thus emerging as one of the finest goalkeepers of the world. He also mentored the Junior Indian hockey team that won the Junior Hockey World Cup after a decade.
Dipa Karmakar earned critical acclaim for her gymnastics display in the Olympics as the Tripura girl finished fourth, thus missing the medal by a whisker. Dipa Karmakar may have missed out on a medal at the Rio Olympics but was lauded for her effort. She was India’s first representative in the Olympics gymnastics competition in more than 52 years and finished fourth. Disc thrower Vikas Gowda has represented India four times in the Olympics and is recognised as one India’s best exports in the sport.
