The Colombian striker was already in the good book of the NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira. This year Mendoza played 797 minutes so far for his eminent MLS club. He came in attention of the coach as he scored the first goal that led NYCFC to win their first match of the season.
The first home defeat of NYCFC made Mendoza marked by his coach Patrick Vieira. In that match the team lost by 1-0, but Mendoza was about to equalize when his shot hit the woodwork. After that match Vieira almost made up his mind about the leading goalscorer in the history of Indian Super League .
This decision from the US part, made the southern Indian side dishearten as Mendoza played the key role for taking Chennaiyin FC to the final of ISL-2.
