The Bengal stumper has been in and out of the Indian team until MS Dhoni retired from test cricket. It will be a very crucial year ahead for Saha as India plays as many as 17 test matches ( including the four tests against West Indies) , in which he have to make it count. Asked how he plans to cement his place in the team in the absence of Dhoni, Saha said he would try to get some big scores under his belt.
"I will try to make a good 70-odd runs to help the team gain advantage over the opposition. If I am successful it will be good for me and the side," commented Saha.
It will be a huge task for him to fill up the void created by the retirement of MS Dhoni in test cricket. He also feels the same as he says, "After Dhoni bhai's retirement, filling his place as the wicketkeeper is not an easy task because he has had won many matches for us. He was a dominant character in world cricket."
Saha has the experience of playing alongside Dhoni since his stint with Chennai Super Kings in IPL and also whatever little opportunity he had in test matches for India. He has seen from close corners what Dhoni is capable of as the former test captain was a proven match winner for India in all formats. The wicketkeeper said he also would love to contribute in the winning cause of the team as that will give him more satisfaction. "I am trying to do what Dhoni bhai did for us - that is to win matches with contributions coming from his bat as well as by taking catching and effecting stumpings in crucial situations," he said.
The 31 year old wicketkeeper batsman said he relished the challenges of batting with the lower order batsmen because it helps the side to get some vital runs to put up good total on the scoreboard. He scored two fifties in the test series in Sri Lanka before returning back home with an injury before the third test match of the series. "I like batting with the lower-order because scoring vital runs in crunch situations helps us put up a good total," he said.
Saha also said Dhoni always told him to work on his natural wicket keeping instincts rather than doing something extravagant.
“Dhoni bhai always suggested me to work on my natural wicket keeping instincts and gave invaluable tips on how to keep wickets in different conditions like Australia and other places in the world.”
