Kolkata: Like other members of the Indian Cricket team, he doesn't a chance to feature in all the three formats of the game however star wicket-keeping batsman Wriddhiman Saha prefers to stay involved with cricket all the time. When not playing cricket for the nation he is seen playing for the Bengal team or engaging in club cricket. But the thing that remains constant throughout is that Wriddhiman always engages himself with this beautiful game as according to his ideology, the more amount of game he plays, the more he improves as a cricketer, a batsman and as a wicket-keeper.

The Bengal cricket team has started their Ranji Trophy journey on a high note and Wriddhi was a part of the squad for the first two games. Wriddhi who is currently enjoying the festival of lights, i.e. Diwali with his family will taking on Himachal Pradesh in their third game at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

In an exclusive interview with correspondent Sabyasachi Bagchi, Wriddhiman Saha shares his views, ranging from sledging incidents, Bengal performance to his test cricket journey, Unhappy moments to the DRS System.

XT: What is approach to Bengal cricket?

Wriddhiman: Since I joined Indian cricket while playing from Bengal, so always at the back of my mind I always think about the Bengal team. Even while playing for the Indian team if given a chance or opportunity I keep myself informed about cricket in Bengal.

XT: Bengal began their Ranji Trophy on a high note. What are your predictions on this ingoing season?

Wriddhiman: Yes we had a very good start to the season. We comprehensively won the second game and won the match with a day in hand. The way we started this season is quite good and if things carry on like that we can surely progress to the knockout stage. We will also be aiming to rectify our mistakes.

XT: A look back to your Test match journey

Wriddhiman: Earlier the goal was to play for India and now when I have achieved that, the goal is to continue performing well in the games.

XT: Your skipper Virat Kohli is a highly aggressive captain, what is your say on aggressive game plans like sledging?

Wriddhiman: The sole objective is not let the batsmen get comfortable and in doing so we have took part in sledging as a group. And these tricks work, so we have conversations regarding that and we will hope to main this.

XT: Can you recount any such incident in which you took part in sledging?

Wriddhiman: To recount the most recent incident would be against Australia. They had won the first game so they certainly had an upperhand in the beginning of the second game. It is in the nature of many batsmen who tend to get angry if they are sledged upon. One such example would that of Steve Smith who reacts when he is negatively approached.

XT: Cricket analysts have named you to be the current best wicket keeper of the world. What is your say on that?

Wriddhiman: I am not so much comfortable with such claims. I only aim to perform my role well and lastly those who make these claims it their personal opinion. The primary role is to perform well as a wicket-keeper and as a batsman and thereby help my team.

XT: Many a times we have seen Virat and the other bowlers refer to you when appealing for the Decision Review System (DRS). What is your role under such conditions?

Wriddhiman: We often had meetings where it was decided that during such conditions, the keeper and the first slip would share their views and then convince the skipper to take the call. If the decision doesn't go in our favour then no one is to be blamed and we have had such meeting before.

XT: Any such event which you are personally unhappy and think you could have done well?

Wriddhiman: One such match would be the Adelaide match where the game was in our hands and we had positive instructions to carry on. I still think had I continued my performance with Virat we could have won the game. After hitting a boundary and an over-boundary I lost my wicket and thus this game is certainly a game which makes me unhappy.

XT: When Dhoni was the keeper of the squad you had to wait for your chance and now you have sealed your spot in the Indian team, the other wicketkeepers have to wait for their chance. So what is your say on this matter? Any message for them?

Wriddhiman: Yes it's true. Dhoni has been a brilliant cricketer as well as a hugely successful captain and thus during his time I got plenty of chances to share the dressing room but unfortunately was rarely featured in games. And thus my aim is to continue playing well for my country and I am continuously trying to commit my best to the game. As for the upcoming keepers it is up to them as it is an individual challenge and how once accepts it is also entirely up to them. A message for them would be to always deliver well for the team and what matters most is the victory of the team.
