There are not many interested candidates for the job though. According to sources, BCCI has received no applications for the job.
Former India opener Virender Sehwag along with Australian Tom Moody was tipped to replace Kumble. Although Sehwag did make it clear that he is not interested in the job, but should an opportunity arise Veeru will get the backing of none other than Kohli. The Indian captain is not sharing the same understanding with Kumble, which he did over the last one year. It was previously seen that a person is appointed as the coach even after missing the deadline as was the case with Kumble. The former leg-spinner was persuaded to apply for the post.
It is learnt that Sehwag was contacted by one of the general managers of the BCCI on the sidelines of an IPL game, and asked to apply for the job of coach.
Present coach Anil Kumble has invited strong criticism from a section of board members after taking an active role in pay negotiations with BCCI members and the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), demanding a sharp raise for cricketers and members of the support staff. Despite his excellent record as the coach, the BCCI last week invited applications for the post, triggering talk that the reasons Kumble was asked to apply for the job again were not merely cricketing.
During his one-year stint, India have won five straight Test series, and risen to the No. 1 position in Tests.
It is also learnt that a few Indian players have expressed reservations over Kumble’s attitude as hard task master. The Indian coach and captain were hardly seen discussing anything among themselves during the practice sessions here in England. Instead Kumble was seen having a long discussion in the middle with former India captain MS Dhoni after the practice session ahead of the warm up tie with Bangladesh at the Oval.
Sensing the situation reaching out of hands, the Chairman of the Committee of Adminsitrators, Mr Vinod Rai is flying in to Birmingham to have a word with both Kumble and Kohli. Mr Rai is also likely to meet Cricket Advisory Committee members Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar.
The CAC were entrusted to interview the applicants, but in the present situation there won’t be any requirement.
Reigning champions India will take on Pakistan in their first match of the ICC Champions Trophy here in Edgbaston on June 04.
