Sony Norde celebrates after scoring his first Derby goal | Image: AIFF[/caption]Siliguri: Sony Norde has cleared all air about his celebration last night after scoring his maiden goal in the Kolkata derby of the I League at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. The Haitian marksman’s reaction after his goal has created a storm in the social media. Sony ran towards the stand where East Bengal supporters were seated and showed signs of firing a steyn-gun. The gesture annoyed the East Bengal fans. But the man himself is relaxed about his celebration as he clarified it was not meant for the Red and Gold fans. Talking to reporters at Siliguri, Norde claimed, “It was about my son. I enjoy his gesture when he is on video call. He likes it very much. It is nothing to do with the East Bengal supporters as it was not meant for them.”
On being asked was he expressing his strength towards the rival fans, Norde said, “A lot has been said about me over the last three seasons that I am not successful in derby. I am happy that I could prove that when I am fit I can do anything on the field.”
On being asked whether it was the best season that he is having during his three year stint with Mohun Bagan, Norde commented, “Yesterday’s match was definitely one of the best I played for Mohun Bagan. In fact we are in sublime form in the last three matches. We played well against Bengaluru FC and Abahani in AFC Cup.”
It was a master stroke from Sanjay Sen to play U’22 footballer in the right-out position last night. But there is also a very interesting story behind. The Mohun Bagan gaffer has recently started a practice to have the senior players in the team sharing rooms with juniors during away matches. And the most interesting fact is both Norde and Azhar were the room-mates in Siliguri.
Norde heaped huge praises on his room-mate Azhar. The Haiti marksman had encouraging words for the U’22 footballer. According to Norde, “Just tell him to keep working hard. He has a long way to go. As a young player to score a goal like he did in derby, was just brilliant. I am very happy for him. He is a talented player. His goal was the best among the two goals. He took the shot from a distance.”
Azhar himself did not hide his excitement sharing room with Norde. According to Azhar, “He is a great human being. He gave me tips ahead of the derby. I always used to watch him play. I try and follow all my seniors in the team.”
The footballer from Moshat Gram got a call from his father last night after the match.
“My father called me up yesterday after the match. My parents always encourage me to play well. He always wanted me to play football,” said Azhar.
Mohun Bagan will next take on Shillong Lajong in another crucial I League encounter. According to Norde, “The game that I played yesterday is past. We have a very important match coming up against Lajong. It will not be easy for us. We will go for the three points. The Lajong match will be like a final for us.”
