Image Source: twitter[/caption]Internet Desk: Star batsman Yuvraj Singh was named in the Indian One-Day International (ODI) and T20 squads for the three-match series against England, led by new skipper Virat Kohli, starting on January 15, BCCI's Chairman of Selectors M.S.K. Prasad announced here on Friday.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who on Wednesday stepped down as the limited overs side skipper, was included in both the sides as a wicketkeeper-batsman.
Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane were recalled to the team after being out due to injuries by the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) selection panel.
All-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who were rested for the New Zealand ODIs, are also back in the squad. The duo played in the five Tests against England.
Veteran left-hander Suresh Raina, who was ignored for the England ODIs, found himself along with pacer Ashish Nehra in the squad for the three T20Is. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was named in the T20 squad.
There was confusion with the selection committee meeting due to which the meeting has to be postponed for almost three hours.
The highlight of the selection committee meeting was the comeback of Yuvraj Singh. The versatile all-rounder was part of India’s T20 squad last year. The left hander returned to the ODI squad after scoring 672 runs in five Ranji Trophy games for Punjab this season. He played his last ODI in 2013.
For Rishabh, it was his maiden call up for the India team. During his breakthrough Ranji season, the Delhi batsman scored the fastest hundred by an Indian batsman in first-class cricket. The milestone came against Jharkhand in Trivandrum, when in the second innings he made 117 off 106 in the first Pant needed just 48 balls to get another hundred. It has been a breakthrough season in the Ranji Trophy for Pant, who amassed 972 runs in 12 innings, including a triple century against Maharashtra in a league fixture. With a strike of 107.28 and an average of 81 in those eight matches, Pant had done enough to impress the selectors
With Axar Patel and Jayant Yadav not fit, the selectors had no other options but to stick with Ravichandran Ashwin and Rabindra Jadeja. Fast bowler Md Shami was also ruled out due to injury.
Haryana leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been recalled. The Royal Challengers Bangalore cricketer last played a series for the national team in Zimbabwe.
From India’s previous ODI squad, Amit Mishra, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah have been retained. Hardik Pandya returns after recovering from injury sustained while part of the Test team in November. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back for both ODIs and T20Is, while Ashish Nehra is back in the latter having not played since the ICC World Twenty20 last year.
Shikhar Dhawan also returns to the ODI squad and will partner KL Rahul at the top of the order in ODI’s.
