Internet Desk: It's been a remarkable year for Indian sports women. From Wrestling, Gymnastics, Badminton, Tennis, Cricket Indian sports women brought accolades from all quarters to make the country proud this year. As the year comes to an end xtratime.in looks back at the successful women sports personalities who were at the limelight of headlines in 2016.

In 2016 Summer Olympics won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics and the fourth female Olympic medalist from the country. After losing to eventual finalist Valeria Koblova of Russia in the quarterfinal, she qualified for the repechage round where she defeated Pürevdorjiin Orkhon of Mongolia in her first bout. She won the bronze medal after a 8–5 victory over the reigning Asian champion Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan, despite trailing 0–5 at one stage, in the repechage medal playoff, and became India's first female wrestler to win an Olympic medal.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal. She is one of the two Indian badminton players to ever win an Olympic medal – other being Saina Nehwal. The win against Wang Yihan set the Semi final match with the Japanese Nozomi Okuhara, who went down 0–2, ensuring Sindhu a podium finish. This set stage for her final showdown with the world No. 1 and top seeded Spaniard Carolina Marín. The 83-minute match resulted in favour of the Spaniard against Indian, 2–1 games with that result, Sindhu clinched the silver medal. She charted history of achieving the feat as she is youngest and first women individual to bag an Olympic Silver medal representing India.



Dipa Karmakar

Dipa Karmakar an artistic gymnast who represented the country at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She is the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics, and the first Indian gymnast to do so in 52 years. She attained 4th position in Women's Vault Gymnastics event of Rio Olympics 2016 with an overall score of 15.066. Karmakar is only the fifth woman in gymnastics history to land the Produnova vault, or the handspring double front. The Produnova is an artistic gymnastics vault consisting of a front handspring onto the vaulting horse and two front somersaults off. The vault currently has a 7.0 D-score, and is the hardest vault performed in women's artistic gymnastics.

Deepa Malik

Deepa Malik is the first Indian woman athlete to win a medal in Paralympic Games and won a Silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in the shot put. She has won accolades for her participation in various adventure sports. She was previously honored with the Arjuna award in 2012, at the age of 42 yrs.

Aditi Ashok

Aditi made history be being the youngest and first Indian to win the Lalla Aicha Tour School and therefore secure her Ladies European Tour card for the 2016 season. This win also made her the youngest winner of a Q School for an international tour. Aditi won the 2016 Hero Women's Indian Open with a score of 3-under-par 213, and in the process became the first Indian to win a Ladies European Tour title. She picked up a second win two weeks later at the Qatar Ladies Open and finished the season second on the Order of Merit.

Sania Mirza

Mirza and Hingis kicked off their 2016 WTA tour in Australia by winning the tournaments in Brisbane and Sydney. In the 2016 Australian Open they were seeded first and won the Doubles title which is Mirza's third Grandslam title. After a successful doubles pair partnership with Martina Hingis for a long period, Mirza and Hingis announced their mutual decision to split as a team, citing last few under-par performances. Although Mirza teamed up with Hingis again for the 2016 WTA Finals in Singapore, where she was the two-time defending champion. However, the team lost in the semifinals to Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova. However, in spite of the loss Mirza finished as the Year end Number 1 for the second consecutive season.

Harmanpreet Kaur

In January 2016, she helped India to win series in Australia as well as scored a 31-ball 46 runs in India's highest ever chase in T20 internationals. She continued her form in 2016 ICC Women's World Twenty20 where she scored 89 runs and took seven wickets in four matches. In June 2016, she became the first Indian cricketer to be signed by an overseas Twenty20 franchise. Sydney Thunder, the Women's Big Bash League champions, signed her for the 2016–17 season.

Smriti Mandhana

Smriti was the only Indian player to be named in the ICC Women's Team of the Year 2016. In the second ODI game of India's tour of Australia in 2016 at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, Mandhana scored her maiden hundred (102 off 109 balls), in a losing cause. In September 2016, Mandhana was signed up for a one-year deal with Brisbane Heat for the Women's Big Bash League, and along with Harmanpreet Kaur, become the first Indians to be signed up for the League.
