East Bengal to play its home matches in Barasat, Mohun Bagan will host matches at Rabindra Sarobar
Internet Desk: The first derby of the forthcoming I League 2016-17 is likely to take place in Siliguri on February 12, 2017. The derby will be hosted by East Bengal while the return leg will be hosted by Mohun Bagan in Guwahati.
East Bengal will play their home matches in Barasat while Mohun Bagan will have Rabindra Sarobar stadium as their home ground. Earlier both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan has shown Rabindra Sarobar stadium as their home venues. East Bengal also showed Barasat as the second option for home matches.
The Rabindra Sarobar stadium was the venue for Atletico de Kolkata’s home matches in the Indian Super League this season. Both the Kolkata giants were somewhat forced to show Rabindra Sarobar Stadium as its home venue due to the unavailability of the Salt Lake Stadium which is getting ready for the FIFA U’17 World Cup in India.
It will be a double header on the opening day of the I League next year with Aizawl FC hosting East Bengal at Rajiv Gandhi stadium while champions Bengaluru FC taking on Shillong Lajong at Kanteerava Stadium. Federation Cup champions Mohun Bagan is likely to begin their campaign against Churchill Brothers on January 08 at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium. On the same day new entrants of the I League i.e., Minerva Punjab FC will play Chennai City FC at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium. There is another match on the same day between Mumbai FC and DSK Shivajians at Cooperage.
Mohun Bagan play their first away match against Chennai City FC on January 21. East Bengal play its first home match against Bengaluru FC on January 22.
The I League fixtures will soon be released by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) this week. Below is the preliminary fixture of both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in I League 2016-17:
