Internet Desk: Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is in the running for a top post in a revamped Australian cricket. The Australian recently took himself away from the role of coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians, raising speculation about his future.

Former Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawerdene replaced Ponting as the new coach of the franchise owned by Nita Ambani.

There has been a lot of chopping and changing following Australia’s thrashing at home at the hands of South Africa. The visitors beat Australia by an innings and 80 runs to win the test match and the series at Hobart.

Chairman of selectors Rodney Marsh, who resigned from his post, was replaced by Trevor Hohns. Another former cricketer Greg Chappell was also appointed as interim selector.

Ponting can be seen either as the coach of the Australian team or he can take over the role of Chairman of Selection Committee.

In fact a tweet by his former teammate Damien Martyn has given rise to speculations that Ponting's expertise may be sought in what can be termed as distressed times in Australian cricket.
"One of @CricketAus greats is no longer coaching the @mipaltan IPL side. Could a big announcement be coming"
Ponting didn't do too badly in his two years as coach with Mumbai Indians. The franchise won their second title in the 2015 edition.
It goes to be seen whether Punter will get a bigger role in Cricket Australia. His appointment as coach or chairman of selector cannot be ruled out.
