The Jamaican who was not a part of the West Indies team since 2014 for various reasons including the stand-off with the Board expressed his desire to make a return to the longer format in a promotional event for Tamil Nadu Premier League. Speaking in front of the school children, Gayle said, “It’s a possibility. We are in talks, so we’ll see what happens.”
Gayle is one of the few players who have the distinction of scoring two triple hundreds in Test. Speaking on the disparity between West Indies Test and T20 squads, the Jamaican commented, “The problem is with the application as the current players are failing to concentrate for longer periods of time. This has been the case since the time I made my debut under Brian Lara. The problem is we have failed to play quality cricket consistently for longer sessions. That's not the case in T20s as we have the experience and the talent to go the distance.”
Gayle doesn’t want to give suggestions on what would make Test cricket more meaningful in the T20 era, because his previous comments on improving the format didn’t go down well with the authorities. “I’m not the man to answer it. It’s a bit difficult to comment, the question is for the bigger authorities,” said Gayle who plays in almost all the franchisee-based league in the world.”
But the senior pro stood in support of present generation of West Indies cricketers. “To be successful in Tests will actually take time since it’s a rebuilding process. The youngsters in the team need to mature, gain a lot of experience and they still need a few senior players here and there to actually guide them along. The board and the players are trying to sort things out and hopefully one day it will happen and everyone will be on the same page. There have been meetings, effort and progress to get everything on track for West Indies cricket,” he added.
Gayle heaped praises on his RCB teammate Virat Kohli for scoring big runs without taking innovative shots which are the order of the day in this age of T20 cricket. “Kohli is not a poor hitter but he had class written all over. He predominantly places the ball in the gaps and eventually pick up a few sixes. Kohli is one batsman who will bat normally and still be able to score a hundred in T20,” he said.
The Jamaican batsman’s new book ‘Six Machine’ is already attracted the attention of the fans all over the world. He will have another book launch in the Capital on September 09, which will be attended by BCCI President Anurag Thakur and Virender Sehwag. On being asked about the feedback of his new book, he said, “It has been excellent. People can hear my voice from within the book and we have used a few Jamaican slangs in it which many have liked. I am happy to have been able to do a book and share my story with the world. I still have a lot more to share and may need a few more pages for one more book.”
