500th Test : Kiwis consolidate at the end of rain hit second day. File Picture[/caption]Internet Desk : Torrential downpour forced the stoppage of play midway after the lunch session on Day 2 of the second test match between India & New Zealand. New Zealand were 152/1 when play stopped play. Earlier the BlackCaps restricted the hosts for 318.
In the morning session a cameo of 42 runs from Ravindra Jadeja helped India go past the 300 run mark. The last wicket pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav added a valuable 41 runs. The Indian innings ended on 318 after a knick from Umesh Yadav was taken by the Kiwi keeper BJ Wattling .
New Zealand’s opening pair started steadily with Guptill(21) playing a few elegant shots on both sides of the boundary, but he failed to capitalize his start as he was trapped in front of the wicket to Umesh Yadav . Despite being a world-class player in the limited over games, his failure continues in test cricket, as in his last 12 Test innings, he had managed to score a half century only.
Tom Latham and Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson started to rebuild the innings. They stitched an unbeaten partnership of 117-runs for the second wicket. New Zealand skipper was unbeaten on 65* while Latham was not out on 56*. The visitors at close of play were 152/1, still trailing by 166 runs.
The Indians were unlucky as a sweep from Latham went to KL Rahul at forward short leg but the opener fumbled before latching on to it. The decision went upstairs and the umpire gave it a not out as the ball touched the grill of Rahul’s helmet and hence the umpires decided against it. Williamson too edged a delivery from Jadeja in the 43rd over to wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha, but the umpire didn’t heard the edge and remained unmoved.
With forecast of more rains looming large in the next few days, it will be a tricky next 3 days.
Brief Scores
India – 318 , Umesh Yadav 1/22
NZ – 152/1 , Kane Williamson 65*, Tom Latham 56*
