Two most attacking tennis stars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be seen at the same side of the court for the first time.
The duo have agreed to play as a team to show respect to the legendary Australian tennis player Rod Laver. The competition will be between two groups, one consisting players from Europe and the other from the rest of the world.
Roger and Nadal being from Sweden and Spain consecutively will play from the Europian team. In that context they committed to be teamed up as doubles players.
Created by Team8, a sports agency formed by Federer and his agent Tony Godsick, Tennis Australia and Brazilian businessman Jorge Paulo Lemann, the first edition will take place between Sep. 22-24 in Prague next year.
“It’s going to be absolutely unbelievable to be on the same side of the net as Rafa, finally,” Federer said with a smile at a press conference to launch the event in New York on Wednesday. “It’s a great feeling, rather than always facing that big forehand, now I can actually support it and say ‘hit one more’ and I’ll take a lot of joy out of it.”
The plan is for the Laver Cup to be held annually, except during Olympic years, two weeks after the US Open, with the location rotating. There will be six men on each team: four based on the rankings after Wimbledon, and two captain's picks announced after the US Open.
Former rivals Bjorn Borg of Sweden (Europe) and John McEnroe of the US (World team) will serve as captains for the first three years.
