Sai Praneeth won the singles as the fourth seed. New-comers Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy also clinched the doubles’ title.
When the decision of choosing Manu and Sumeeth for Rio Olympics’ doubles’ was taken, there was confusion over the performance of this duo. This duo has the world ranking 19 and they have no previous records in doubles’ or in singles. They were completely unknown in comparison to the women shuttlers of India.
On Sunday the doubles’ pair faced pair of Canadian shuttlers Adrian Liu and Toby Ng. the match was all along in favor of the Indian pair. Sumeeth and Manu took only half an hour to complete the match. They have beat the opponent by 21-8, 21-14 in the final. Previously this top seed won over pair of Indonesian shuttler Andrei Adistia and Canada’s Dong Adam.
Ahead of the Rio Olympic this win will boost them to get Olympic medal for the country. They are the first Indian pair of shuttlers to qualify for the games. They were ranked 11 in the Olympic qualifier.
On Sunday apart from this doubles’ pair singles player B. Sai Praneeth won the Canadian open singles. In an easy match he rulled out Korea’s Lee Hyun II by 21-12, 21-10. However, it is sad for him not to get qualified for the Rio Olympics following the Badminton World
Federation world ranking as of 5th May 2016.
Praneeth also did not get much trouble in defeating the Korean. He took less than half an hour to finish the match. The all along show by the Indian shuttler can prove that the practice of the Indian is on the right track one month ahead of the Rio Olympics.
