Internet Desk: Italy and Spain were supposed to go marching into the Euro 2016 knock-out stages after encouraging performances in their opening two games.

But the European heavyweights both suffered disappointing defeats in their final Group game to make Monday's match up increasingly difficult to call.

It is, of course, a repeat of the final we witnessed four years ago, and undoubtedly the pick of this round of the competition.

Antonio Conte's side are built on hard graft rather than glamorous individuals while Spain are masters of possession but appear to lack a clinical edge in front of goal.

With the victor likely to be installed as favourites to lift the trophy, expect an entertaining encounter.

David De Gea has received the backing of Spain team mate Cesc Fabregas ahead of their crunch Euro 2016 match with Italy.

The Manchester United goalkeeper was plunged into controversy surrounding his personal life on the eve of the tournament.

Critics then questioned his position as Spain's No.1 after was caught out at his near post by Ivan Perisic in Croatia's surprise 2-1 victory over Vicente Del Bosque's side.

Italy have not beaten Spain in a major tournament since the 1994 World Cup and were beaten by today's opponents at Euro 2008 and in the 2012 final.

Despite history appearing to favour Spain, Fabregas predicted a tough encounter when the sides meet in the last-16 at the Stade de France on Monday.

Defeat to Croatia meant Spain finished runners-up in Group D while Antonio Conte guided Italy to top-spot in Group E.
