Gopal Roy, Kalyani: East Bengal coach Khalid Jamil would be an unhappy person after the Calcutta Football League (CFL) match against Mohammedan Sporting today at Kalyani Stadium. The East Bengal gaffer have a valid reason to be so as Red and Golds lost a golden opportunity to seal the fate of the CFL ahead of the derby on September 24. The 2-2 stalemate also meant East Bengal’s winning streak came to an end and makes the title race wide open. The East Bengal coach expressed his frustration by making a controversial comment, aimed at a Mohammedan Sporting official. Khalid was also seen getting involved in a slight argument with Dipendu Biswas.

“Where was this display by your team against Mohun Bagan?” said Jamil which caught the Mohammedan official by surprise.

Later talking to the reporters after the match, Khalid said, “I am not here to answer on what comments I made to anyone after the match. This is a post match press conference and I will be happy to answer questions only on the game.”

The Red and Golds supporters will feel disappointed as the ball hit the opponent cross piece on three occasions. Reacting to it, Khalid said, “I am not disappointed with the result. We missed quite a few opportunities (three shots by East Bengal footballers hit the cross piece) but then these are all part of the game.”

A pile driver from Willis Plaza towards the dying minutes of the match saved the blushes of a humiliating defeat. On being asked about Plaza’s performance, the gaffer said, “He is no doubt a good player but I am more concerned with the overall performance of the team. We need to work hard as a team.”

On being asked about the missed opportunities, the Red and Gold coach said, “Chance misses are part and parcel in a game of football. Today wasn’t our day as we could have surely found the net on another day. I am not here to complain about losing two points. They (Mohammedan) played a lot better today than us.”

Mohammedan custodian Shankar Roy created controversy by wasting time towards the end but the East Bengal coach did not want to fread too much into it.

Mohammedan Sporting coach Biswajit Bhattacharya has valid reasons to be disappointed with the result. The Black Panthers dominated most of the proceedings and could have returned with full points. The Mohammedan coach did not hide his frustration after the result. According to Biswajit, “We were stripped off a genuine penalty. I am proud of my players the way they played. We could have won the match easily had they not made a goal line save. I am frustrated with the scheduling of matches as we were forced to play three matches in a week.”

Both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are now tied on 19 points from 7 matches with a match remaining ahead of the derby. East Bengal next face Tollygunge Agragami while Mohun Bagan lock horns against Peerless.
