India goalkeeper Subrata Paul opts for voluntary suspension. File Pic[/caption]Internet Desk: Subrata Paul, arguably the best goal keeper that the country has produced has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after the goalie himself applied a request.
The Spiderman as he has been nicknamed was tested positive for a banned drugged named Terbutaline Beta-2 Agonist when he was in the National camp on March. He had been under provisional suspension from the last week of May.
NADA however allowed Paul to compete in the Federation Cup with his team DSK Shivajians. However Paul himself applied for voluntary suspension after his team failed to qualify for the semis in the tournament.
“Paul opted for voluntary (provisional) suspension. So, he stands suspended,” said NADA director general Navin Agarwal on Tuesday.Paul’s case is likely to come up for hearing before a disciplinary panel shortly. In case he is found guilty and is placed under a period of ineligibility, then the duration of his provisional suspension will be deducted from the overall ban period. Surprisingly, none in the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was aware of Paul’s suspension. He had been included in India’s national camp for an international friendly against Nepal on May 20. But he left the camp on May 22 citing a hamstring injury,” an AIFF official said.
“He told the coach (Stephen Constantine) that he would be undergoing rehabilitation. He never told the federation that he would be writing to the NADA for a provisional suspension. However, this is also a fact that the team management hadn’t been including him for the matches and he was largely on the sidelines.”

Subrata in his letter stated that he drank the cough syrup after team doctor’s (Sreejith Kamal) advice.
As a proof Paul, has submitted the doctor’s prescription before the panel, which contains the name of the cough syrup. The syrup had terbutaline Beta-2 Agonist, which is a bronchodilator – a drug “that causes widening of the bronchi, and is useful in the alleviation of asthma”. Though the, athletes must apply for a TUE (therapeutic use exemption) certificate before using it.
“The team doctor would be called for questioning. He is staring at a lifetime suspension from all sporting activities if he fails to put forward his defense satisfactorily. But, even that won’t allow Paul to escape the punishment under the WADA rules. He may still be sanctioned for not exercising due precaution. He may get a six-month suspension,” a NADA official said.
