Though according to the cricket pundits India are firm favourites to win the title but Pakistan on the other hand too will be high on confidence after demolishing hosts England in the semifinals few days back.
As the rivals face each other at The Oval this Sunday, let us glance through the five most outstanding matches between the two sides in ICC events.
1992 Cricket World Cup
The fifth staging of the World Cup had Pakistan become the world champions for the first time. Mohammed Azharuddin led The Indian cricket team finished on 7th in the tournament. India had won only 2 matches and one of them happened to be against arch-rivals and champions Pakistan. India chose to bat first and posted a total of 216 runs with Sachin Tendulkar scoring an undefeated 54. Pakistan could only managed to score 173 runs before getting all-out. The most unforgetable moment of the match was when Javed Miandad, frustruated with wicketkeeper Kiran More, got into an on-field row with the Indian. Maindad also spoke to More and complained about constant chatter coming from behind the stumps. When Miandad couldn’t tolerate anymore, he riciduled the Indian by jumping on the spot with a bat in hand in an animated fashion.
1996 Cricket World Cup
World Cup 1996 was a victory for the Indian team when India scored an incredible total of 287 runs riding on Navjot Singh Sidhu's admirable 93 in the quarterfinal, while batting first. Having a hard time coping up, Pakistan managed to score just 248 runs. The showpiece event of the match was the argument between Indian fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad and Pakistan's Amir Sohail. Sohail after hitting Prasad for a couple of boundaries mocked the bowler rudely. The next ball saw Prasad breaking Sohail's off stump and gave a fitting reply.
2003 ICC Cricket World Cup
India’s fourth consecutive win against Pakistan in the World Cup happened in 2003. India won by 6 wickets in a group stage clash between the two rivals. Pakistan reached a total of 273, batting first. During India’s batting Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh, both scored 98 and 50 respectively to help their side on the way to triumph. The spat between Shoaib Akhtar and Virender Sehwag was the most interesting moment of the match. Akhtar was trying to disturb Sachin. After a while when the master blaster struck a brilliant six of Akhtar's delivery over the third man, Sehwag mocked the Pakistani fast bowler.
2004 ICC Champions Trophy
The year 2004 marked Pakistan's first and only win over India in the ICC Champions Trophy. India, Pakistan and Kenya were placed in the same group. Both the arch-rivals won their respective matches against Kenya and faced each other in a heart-wrenching clash. Batting first India failed to put on a formidable total on board as they only managed to score 200 against Pakistan. At one stage the Men in Blue were reduced 73/5 but Rahul Dravid and Ajit Agarkar held the innings together to help India to reach the 200 mark. Pakistan crossed the line after losing 7 wickets and qualified for the semifinal of the tournament.
2011 ICC Cricket World Cup
India emerged as the winners against Pakistan in the semi-final of ICC World Cup 2011. Yet again, Sachin Tendulkar was the savior of the team by scoring 85 runs which brought India’s score to 260 runs in 50 overs. The Indian bowlers bowled brilliantly as Pakistan were bowled out for just 231. After 28 long years of beating Sri Lanka in the final, India went on to win the Champions Trophy.
