Sources on Friday have confirmed that Woakes will have to miss the rest of the tournament as a result of a side strain against Bangladesh.
England is worried about Root’s health and form because prior to their second match on Tuesdayagainst New Zealand in Cardiff, Root suffered a pull in his calf-muscle, but somehow managed to play through the second half of his career-best innings.
Soon after England's eight-wicket win, Root described his own injury as “just a bit of a cramp”. Eoin Morgan, along with Root added a victorious 143 run-stand.
"A scan has confirmed that Chris Woakes sustained a left side strain in yesterday's ICC Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh," as per sources.
"The injury means Woakes will miss the rest of England's participation in the Champions Trophy. An update on a replacement for the seamer for the remainder of the tournament will follow in due course."
Apart from Root (133 not out off 129), help from opener Alex Hales (95 off 86) and captain Eoin Morgan (75 not out off 61), led England to reach the 306-run target in 47.2 overs. It was the first time that 300 was successfully chased in the tournament history.
England was expected to reach the target at ease at the Kennington Oval after they came into the tournament at the back of a series win against South Africa.
