25th June 1983: 'Road to Glory' of India's first ever World Cup Trophy

Internet Desk: Ahead of 1983 World Cup in England, Aussie skipper Kim Hughes predicted that Kapil Dev led India would be the dark-horse of the tournament. A few persons would have thought on that time that his statement would turn out to be true at the end of the tournament.

In that World Cup, India was in Group B with two times World Champions West Indies, Australia and amateur Zimbabwe. On their journey to the feat India played 8 matches and won 6 including the final.  Let’s relive the memories of India’s World Cup victory in 1983:

 1. June 9, 1983 - India v West Indies at Manchester 

India won the match by 34 runs (India 262/8; WI 228)

India started their journey in 1983 World Cup against two time World Champions West Indies. On that point of time West Indies never lost a single game in World Cup but on that match India wrote a new history. Kapil Dev led India cricket team beat West Indies by 34 and showed the world that they are not the minnows anymore. Yashpal Sharma scored 89 runs from 120 deliveries on the other hand Roger Binny and Ravi Shastri shared 3 wickets each to take India home.

2. 11th June 1983 - India v Zimbabwe at Leicester

India won the match by 5 wickets with 22.3 overs to spare (Zim 155; India 157/5)

India continued their winning run in the second match too where they beat Zimbabwe by 5 wickets. Madan Lal was the hero of the match as he took 3 quick wickets and after that Zimbabwe failed to make a comeback from the early blunder. While batting Sandeep Patil smashed a quick-fire half century to ensure his side’s victory.

3. 13th June 1983 - Australia v India at Nottingham 

Australia beat India by 162 runs (Aus 320/9; India 158)

India’s winning streak came to an end against the Aussies where they faced a humiliating loss by 162 runs at Nottingham. Batting first Australia posted a mammoth total of 320 runs on board. Kenneth Hervey MacLeay (6/39) demolished the Indian batting line-up with his brilliant spell as India could only manage to score 158.

4. 15th June 1983 - India v West Indies at The Oval 

West Indies won the match by 66 runs (WI 282/9; India 216)

India faced back to back loss in the tournament as they displayed another poor performance against West Indies and lost the tie by 66 runs at The Oval. Batting first West Indies posted a target of 283 runs for India. Sir Vivian Richards (119) hammered the Indian bowlers through all parts of the ground to help his side to reach that total. While chasing only Mohinder Amarnath could manage to score 80 runs and no other batsman was able to play big knocks.

5. 18th June 1983 - India v Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells 

India won by 31 runs (India 266/8; Zim 235)

India faced Zimbabwe in their next tie. At one stage they were tottering on 5 for 17, but then skipper Kapil Dev came to the party and played one of the most memorable innings of 175 not out in just 138 deliveries. Syed Kirmani backed him well as India posted a total of 266/8 in 60 overs. Indian bowlers showed good intent in the field and India won the match by 31 runs.

6. 20th June 1983 - Australia v India at Chelmsford

India won by 118 runs (India 247; Aus 129)

In the last Group league game India thrashed the mighty Aussies by 118 runs. Kapli and Co. scored 247 runs in their allotted 60 overs. Madan Lal and Roger Binny shared four wickets each as Australia could only manage to score 129 before getting all-out.

7. 22nd June 1983 - 1st Semifinal: England v India at Manchester

India won the match by 6 wickets with 5.2 overs to spare (Eng 213; India 217/4)

India was in the World Cup semi-final for the first time. The beat the hosts England comfortably by 6 wickets in the first semi-final at Manchester. After winning the toss, England chose to bat first. The failed miserably in front of their home crowd and could only manage to score 213 before getting all-out. Skipper Kapil Dev (3/35), Binny (2/43) and Amarnath (2/27) displayed some brilliant bowling for their side. Later Mohinder Amarnath (46), Yashpal Sharma (61) and a quick-fire half-century by Sandip Patil (51* from 32 deliveries) confirmed India’s birth in the dream final. Mohinder Amarnath was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant all-round performance.

8. 25th June 1983, Final - India v West Indies at Lord's

India won by 43 runs (India 183; WI 140)

The day will always be regarded as a Golden day in the history of Indian Cricket. No one would have thought that India could make it to the final. Before the match skipper Kapil Dev was unhappy with the pitch as it was more in favour of the bowlers. After winning the toss West Indies sent India to bat first. India could only manage to score 183 runs. Except Srikkanth (38) and Mohinder Amarnath (26) every other batsman failed to contribute for their team.

During the break Kapil said to his team, "Team if this is not a winning total it’s definitely a fighting total".

His words worked like a magic and his team shook the world by beating the two times World Champion by 43 runs in a low scoring game at the traditional Lord’s cricket ground. Amarnath was the pick of the bowlers as he gave just 12 runs in seven overs and took 3 wickets, and he was awarded the Man of the Match for his brilliant performance.
