Image Source: twitter@BCCI[/caption]Internet Desk: The Indian team for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy was announced today in Mumbai. The team has no surprises as a fit-again Rohit Sharma and Md Shami was included in the squad. The eight nation tournament will begin in England on June 01 with the final to be played at Oval on June 18.
Both Rohit and Shami will be making a comeback into the Indian team. It will be Rohit’s first tournament since coming back from a thigh injury he sustained during the ODI series against New Zealand. Shami, on the other hand has not played an ODI since 2015 World Cup semi final. The Bengal pacer had a knee injury which has been troubling him in recent times.
The team comprises of five pacers that include Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and Hardik Pandya. As far as batsmen are concerned, more or less it is the same players who featured in the last ODI series against England in January. Ajinkya Rahane is being considered as the third opener along with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.
Selection committee chairman MSK Prasad told the reporters that the other main players to be discussed in the meeting include Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Kuldeep Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur, each of whom has been placed on standby for the tournament. The five players will train at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore after the IPL ends, and will have visas in place should the need arrive for any of them to fly to England
Defending champions India is pooled with South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Group B. Kohli's team is scheduled to open its campaign on June 4 at Edgbaston against Pakistan, followed by matches with Sri Lanka on June 8 and South Africa on June 11, both at Kennington Oval.
