Kolkata: Mohun Bagan will look to break the derby jinx outside Kolkata, when they take on arch rivals East Bengal in the return leg fixture of I League at Siliguri’s Kanchenjunga Stadium on Sunday. The Mariners have not been able to get past their arch rivals outside Kolkata in the last 16 years. The last time the Mariners got the better over East Bengal was in the Rovers Cup in 2000 through a goal scored by Amar Ganguly. Both the teams settled for a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the Kanchenjunga Stadium.

The Mariners will be high on confidence going into the derby, courtesy their comprehensive win over Bengaluru FC in their last I League encounter. East Bengal on the other hand will be feeling the pressure, having lost their last two encounters against Churchill Brothers and Chennai City FC. The Federation Cup champions are a point short, having played a match less than East Bengal. The Red and Golds have secured 27 points from 14 matches. A win in the derby will brighten the Mariners hopes of becoming the champion twice in three years.

The club president Swapan Sadhan Bose (Tutu) was at the Mohun Bagan ground to encourage the footballers. It was decided that the players will be observing a minutes silence before the start of the match for Soumya Mukherjee, who died in a train accident at Baranagar station while returning from Siliguri after watching the first leg derby.

The President later interacted with the footballers and gave a small pep-talk after the practice. According to Mr Bose, “I have told my footballers not to take any tension. I have urged them to play in an open mind, they way they have played their last two matches.”

He also added, “I would request supporters of both teams to control their emotions. The match should be played in the spirit of the game.”

The Green and Maroon footballers left the city in the afternoon for Siliguri. Huge number of fans gathered at the club premises to encourage the likes of Sony Norde, Katsumi Yuasa,  Darryl Duffy and others.
