Image Source: twitter[/caption]Kolkata: Delhi Daredevils' dashing wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant looks to be one of the favourites to be in the Champions Trophy squad in June. The teenager from Delhi seems to be ticking all the right boxes for being selected in the side. The wicket-keeper has amassed 141 runs from 6 matches in the IPL so far with a strike rate of over 160. Touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Pant gave an exclusive interview to xtratime.in in Kolkata ahead of his team's clash against the Knight Riders on Friday. Here are the excerpts:
How important is IPL for you as a cricketer?
Right now it is very important in Indian cricket because everyone is watching IPL. It is a good platform for anyone who is playing cricket. It is a huge learning experience for the youngsters as they get an opportunity to play alongside great international cricketers.
How has it been playing under Zaheer Khan and what are the things you have learnt from him?
I have learnt so many things under the captaincy of Zaheer Khan. One thing that stands out for me is he always gives confidence to his players. He is so innovative with his field placements and bowling. He has got a wealth of experience. As a batsman I am also learning from Zak (Zaheer) Bhai.
Your childhood coach Tarak Sinha has been instrumental in shaping your career. How special is the man in your life?
This person shall always remain a special person in my career and also my life. He has seen me grow as a cricketer and has always supported me like my family member.
You scored plenty of runs in Ranji Trophy this season. How difficult was it to transform that into the shorter format?
It is not like as if it is difficult to score in day’s cricket compared to the shorter format. Every game offers a different challenge, so I am just trying to focus on scoring runs across all formats.
What goes through your mind when you walk into the middle to bat?
I just try to keep my head blank so that I can perform well.
You are being tipped to take over the reins of MS Dhoni in the shorter format. Does it put pressure on you?
I do not look at that way. I don’t want to put any pressure on myself by thinking about replacing Mahendra Singh Dhoni. All that I focus upon is to try and play well.
Lastly you have been included under the Central Contract by BCCI. What do you feel?
Nothing really. My prime focus will be score runs in all the formats.
