Pakistan made heavy weather of the seemingly straightforward chase as it lost the wickets of Ahmed Shehzad, Azhar Ali and Younis Khan, who had become the first Pakistani to get to 10,000 Test runs during the course of his first-innings knock of 58, within 24 runs. But Misbah, after blocking the first ball off Devendra Bishoo that he faced, slammed one down the ground and then slog-swept one to take Pakistan over the line to 36 for 3 and to a 1-0 lead.
Earlier in the day, Yasir Shah completed a six-wicket haul to lead a second-innings demolition of West Indies and put Pakistan on the verge of a comfortable victory.
Trailing on the first innings by 121 runs and resuming the day at 93 for 4, West Indies was bowled out for 152 after less than two hours of play on the day.
Having picked up the four wickets to fall on the fourth evening, Yasir was kept waiting for more wickets on the fifth day as his fast-bowling mates grabbed the first four wickets to fall on the day.
But Yasir, who bowled unchanged from one end throughout the morning, was not to be denied another five-wicket haul. He wrapped up the innings with the wickets of Alzarri Joseph and Shannon Gabriel in the space of four deliveries in his 22nd over. He ended with innings figures of 6 for 63 and a match haul of 8 for 154.
Mohammad Amir triggered the beginning of the end for West Indies, inducing an error of judgement from Vishaul Singh, the debutant, who was bowled offering no shot.
Mohammad Abbas, also on debut, then struck two telling blows. Bishoo, the nightwatchman who had defied Pakistan for over an hour, flashed at a wide delivery to be caught by Younis at second slip for 18. Shane Dowrich was then trapped lbw two balls later and at 129 for 7, the end was around the corner.
Jason Holder joined Roston Chase but Wahab Riaz accounted for Holder caught behind as the batsman essayed a loose drive and the partnership stopped at 22 runs.
Yasir took over after that.
Any expectation that Pakistan would knock off the required runs quickly was ended by the dismissals of Shehzad and Azhar in successive overs. Shehzad edged a catch to Dowrich, the wicket-keeper, off Gabriel while Azhar played on to Joseph.
Pakistan went to lunch at 13 for 2 with Younis and Babar Azam at the crease, and Younis was trapped lbw by Bishoo soon after resumption. He asked for a review but replays showed that the ball would hit leg stump and the veteran had to walk back. The other veteran, Misbah, then completed the job without much fuss.
