Kolkata: East Bengal's latest turmoil regarding the vacation of the coach and the players and the recent downfall of the momentum in the ongoing Hero I-League has sparked new controversies as the club officials and the former stalwarts of the Red and Gold brigade offered strict criticism to them. Today, www.xtratime.in spoke to the former legends of the East Bengal club as well as the key officials who made serious impact on their team building this season. Here goes their opnion on the controversial issues as well as the prescription to win the title from here on.
Manoranjan Bhattacharya: East Bengal is not too far behind Aizawl. The coach might go for a vacation. No problem with that as he might have taken the permission well before. But the involvement of the players is all what matters. Their performance and commitment are the most vital aspects. They should sit and discuss about the plans of the coach and prepare themselves accordingly.
Bhaskar Ganguly: The title hopes got a big blow after the last defeat. But the vacation should never be more than two-four days. Otherwise, the fitness might be an issue. I cannot understand the irresponsibility of the coach. If we lose points against Mohun Bagan in the derby, we will have further problems. So, at this point, the absence of the coach might be an issue.
Samaresh Chowdhury: The derby will be on the 9th April. The team should have reduced their days of vacation. Though the coach might have applied for the leave well before the last game and didn't expect his team to lose against Chennai the other day. But the team should have continued their training under the assistant coach. But not happy with the way the team performed in the last few games. The way we played the last couple of games, the championship looks tough if we don't improve.
Surajit Sengupta: I don't know why the players are going for the vacation! The league is not yet over, then why? The club officials have differences on their opinions. Winning and losing have always been there in sport, but it's hard to digest such scattered situation. In 1989, there was almost a similar situation in the club. We the players took the initiative and reached the final of a tournament. But couldn't win the trophy. That is why I'm saying that it is not impossible to win it from here on, but it's tough.
Renedy Singh: Trevor Morgan is a top professional and an excellent coach. The break might be a blessing in disguise for East Bengal and a high-intensity league like this demands this rest for the players. Trevor is a smart coach and knows how to tackle such tough situations. To me, East bengal still have a big chance to win it.
