But football on the sixth floor of a eminent shopping mall at Kolkata! It might seemed a dream, but that is what exactly happened today at New Town to celebrate the International Women's Day. An unprecedented 5-a-side women's football tournament comprising of eight teams were held with a picnic mode today.
The AIFF Vice-President Mr Subrata Dutta was present to inaugurate this innovative initiative by the organizers on this special day. Subrata Dutta said, "In future, our focus will be to organize tournaments like these in regular intervals. I promise to take this issue sincerely."
Indrani Ghosh. the organizer of the event involved the former legends of Indian women's football as well like Sujata Kar to take part in an exhibition game. The atmosphere on the rooftop was something exceptional and the football fever had made it even more exciting.
In an interaction with www.xtratime.in , Indrani told, "I have been involved with East Bengal and Mohun Bagan for years and wanna seriously do something for women's football. Today is a special day and that is why we have chosen to organize this event." She added, "It was like a get together for us. A lot of former players of women's football were present as well. Sujata Kar herself played a game as well.
No doubt, the International Women's day celebration at New Town has indeed created a new trend, a fresh air to the culture of Indian women's sport, which will encourage more events like these in future.
