Debasis Sen, Hyderabad: Wriddhiman Saha will be hoping his bat continue to bring him luck whenever he goes in to bat. The Bengal wicket-keeper batsman on Friday scored his second test ton with the same bat with which he scored his maiden hundred against West Indies at St Lucia on August 09. It was the same bat with which he scored his maiden double hundred in the Irani Trophy final as well.

Saha looked to carry on with the same momentum from where he left in the Irani Trophy match against Gujarat. He reached the three figure mark with a huge six off Taijul Islam. His knock today included 2 sixes and 7 fours.

He did have his share of luck though as he got a reprieve at 4 when Bangladesh keeper Mushfiqur Rahim missed a straightforward stumping off Taijul Islam shortly before lunch.

Saha returned to the Indian team after missing the last three Tests of the five-match series against England. The diminutive wicketkeeper had been in superb form in domestic cricket, scoring his maiden first class double ton and helping Rest of India (ROI) clinch the Irani Cup defeating Ranji champions Gujarat.

On being asked to compare both bowling attacks, the wicketkeeper batsman said, “This attack was more challenging than Gujarat attack as this one is an international attack. There is some difference but the approach was same like my second innings double hundred during Irani Cup. Initially I got a chance but after that I carried on with positive intent.”

He rated the half centuries he scored against New Zealand at Eden Gardens much higher than his test hundreds. The knock at Eden also earned him his first ever Man of the Match.

“I value the two half centuries against New Zealand more coz team needed my contribution. We needed partnerships and quality of bowling was good. We needed to set a target of 300 and taking all these into account, those two 50’s were vital.”

Saha was involved in an unbeaten partnership of 118 runs with Rabindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket. He was at the crease when Virat reached the milestone of scoring his fourth consecutive double hundred in as many series.

“Whenever one bats with Virat, he backs everybody. He would always tell you that play your natural game. If you feel you can hit the ball, go for it. Not that if you are new to the crease you have to defend. That’s why I tried playing that shot (referring to the missed stumping chance) but Virat said that it’s not a problem, if you again get a chance, hit it. He always gives you confidence which is a plus,” said Saha.

He also disclosed that batting coach Sanjay Bangar told him not to hurry after tea until he reached his hundred. According to Saha, “At the tea break, Sanjay bhaiyaa told me that you need 17 runs so first play with straight bat and score the 17 runs and then try to hit. 100 is a special milestone, more so for me as I have played only 20 odd Tests. That’s why I took the approach suggested by Sanjay bhai”

The Bengal stumper got a reprieve at 4 when Bangladesh keeper Mushfiqur Rahim missed a straightforward stumping off Taijul Islam shortly before lunch.

“Yes, I would term it luck as he tried but couldn’t hit the stump. When he got it right second time, I was inside the crease. So possibly, I was destined to get a hundred and that’s why he couldn’t effect that stumping.”

Saha, who made a comeback into the Indian team in place of Parthiv Patel said, “When I got injured Parthiv performed and he did well. Whenever he has got chances, he has performed. But may be after my 200, selectors took a decision which everybody needed to accept. My aim was to bat as long as possible and contribute as much as possible for the team.”

Lastly on being asked why he did not suggest Kohli to take DRS when it looked that the ball might miss the stumps, Saha said, “During the 2nd time, I was about to ask Virat but he was hundred percent sure that he was out. Also it was umpire’s call and even if there was a faint touch, it would have been out. Virat didn’t take a chance and saved a DRS for India.”
