Internet Desk: Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan is out with a special video that documents his fitness journey in his upcoming movie Dangal. The documented 5-minute, 20-second shows the journey of Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) losing 25 kg weight after gaining 96kg to match the character.

The video introduces the people involved behind Aamir’s fat to fit journey - from his fitness trainer Rahul Bhatt to Rakesh Udiyar, bodybuilder and fitness trainer. They talk about how the actor mentally and physically worked on his body so as to get into shape.

Aamir talks about his insistence on having the film shot in reverse - his fat look first and then the bit with his lean look, so that he had the motivation to get back into shape in record time.

“Niteshji told me to start from the young Mahavir Singh Phogat. But I insisted that we start from the reverse. Let’s do the fat portion first as 80% of the film revolves roung the fat Mahavir Singh Phogat. If I had done the fat part later then I wouldn’t have got the motivation to reduce my extra weight which I gained while doing the role,” said the versatile actor.

The fitness trainers and dieticians opted for a customised diet plan for Aamir. It was planned accordingly in consultation with renowned dietitian Dr Nikhil Dhurandhar on calorific deficit for Khan, in which the diet would oscillate from 1,800 kCal to 2,500 kCal.

According to fitness trainer Rahut Bhatt, “We consulted with Dr Nikhil Dulandar, who is a renowned dietician based in America. He planned a customized diet for Aamir.”

To gain weight the actor indulged in everything, “from brownies to samosas, chocolates, ice creams and cakes everyday”, which sounds like a great plan for anyone. The tricky part came when he had to shed all that extra flab, which is where diet was key.

“Putting on the weight was fun. I could eat and drink whatever I wanted and I had a great time. I would say I had a ball. But it was also most un-comfortable, even my wrestling training was affected because I was carrying so much weight that I couldn’t really move faster. You know you need breathing changes when you put on weight. The whole body language changes, the way you walk, the way you sit, the way you stand up, everything changes.”

The director of the film Nitesh Kumar even suggested having a body suit to suit the role. But Aamir rejected the idea immediately.

According to Aamir, “It wouldn’t have done justice to my role. Okay, for the film it would have suited but as an actor it wouldn’t have given me a satisfaction.” He added, “At times during the journey I thought whether I will be able to justify my role or not. But the next moment I told myself that I have to go ahead and do it. I always gave priority to my present rather than thinking about the result at the end.”

The real struggle came when Aamir had to reduce his weight from 96kg to 71kg. Always a perfectionist, Aamir ensured he reduced the 25kg extra weight to suit the role of a young Mahavir Singh Phogat.

“When I started the fitness training, I thought I would not be able to do it. I was so heavy with almost 97kilos and 38% body fat; I even thought it was blunder to have taken the risk. When you look at the peaks of the Himalayas, you feel you will not be able to make it. Certain things in life seem difficult to attain and gets you disappointed. But you always have to be positive.”

The director of the film Nitesh Tiwari did not hide his admiration for the actor. “I was just amazed to see his dedication. For a superstar like him, he was so involved with the film. For any director like me it makes your world look so easy to have such a passionate actor like Aamir,” said Nitesh.

Lastly the actor leaves a message for his fans in the video. He emphasized on a healthy diet for everyone.

“Diet is number 1 in changing your body. You can try as hard as you can. If your diet is not okay you will never get the desired results.”
