At the break, Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid were batting on 27 and 8 respectively.
Most of Kohli's captaincy career has perhaps been spent on reviving Mishra's confidence. And when the legspinner looked short, not necessarily uneconomical, against the lower order batsmen too, having been brought in long after Stokes, Buttler and Moeen were sent back, perceptions needed a serious rejig. What does Mishra lack more: incisive bowling or sharp fielding? His lethargy at fine leg cost Moeen Ali's wicket off Ishant, only for Umesh to redeem it later with another top-edge off one of the many short balls - a very evident bowling plan that was just 146 runs too late.
Stokes fell to Ashwin off the fifth ball of the day, while Buttler was pinned by a skiddy straight ball from Ishant, who's progressively getting back to his flair. And his ferocity spilled over to the second ball that debutant Liam Dawson faced: a short ball that hit him flush on the helmet to underline Test cricket's hardship. But England rally on despite India just about edging the session.
Brief scores:
England 1st innings: 352/7 in 119 overs (Moeen Ali 146, Joe Root 88, Jonny Bairstow 49; Ravindra Jadeja 3/78, Ishant Sharma 2/34).
