Internet Desk: Bengal survived a scare as they managed to salvage a draw against Tamil Nadu in their Ranji Trophy Group A clash at the Madhav Rao Scindia Stadium on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu ended up with three points from the game by virtue of their slender first innings lead of 17 runs as they ended their first innings on 354 in reply to Bengal's 337.
Bengal in their second innings were in deep trouble at 66/5, but a partnership of 87 runs between Sreevats Goswami and Aamir Goni saved Manoj Tiwary from an outright loss. Bengal ultimately managed to score 196/9 in 77 overs.

Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary (7), Agniv Pan (0) and Sudeep Chatterjee (0) were all dismissed cheaply, thanks to some brilliant bowling from Tamil Nadu bowlers
Left hander Shreevats scored 61 runs off 154 balls. His knock included nine boundaries and a six.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu reached 354 runs in the first innings, taking a slender lead of 17 runs. Much of the credit should go to Thangarasu Natarajan (12 not out) and Krishnamoorthy Vignesh (34 no) for their 44-run stand for the last wicket.

Bengal pacer Sayan Ghosh would be happy with his maiden five-for (5/123 in 36.1 overs), he should also take the blame for his wayward bowling at the end of the third evening that the last wicket pair raced to the lead.

It was another failure for Abhimanyu Easwaran as the youngster was caught by substitute Surya Prakash off Vignesh for 12 runs. The talented batsman after getting tons in both innings in the first match against Uttar Pradesh has so far failed to score a big innings.

Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary backed Easwaran to come good in the next match. According to Manoj, “He has been getting starts but not being able to convert it into something substantial. Hopefully he will come good against Baroda.”

Bengal will next play Baroda at Lahli which gets underway from Novemeber 21. The side led by Pathan brothers has so far failed to shine, languishing at the bottom of the table.

According to Manoj, “All the three matches that is played at Lahli this season has been result oriented. We have to target getting full points, if we have any ambition to qualify for the knock-outs.”

The failure of Sayan Sekhar Mondal (28), Manoj Tiwary and Agniv Pan (0) in the second innings will leave the Bengal team management in some sort of concern But Tiwary himself is confident about bouncing back.

“There is nothing to be concerned about losing the momentum. It can happen in a long season. Sudip’s injury did affect us. We have to accept that we did not bat well in the second innings. This match should act as a wakeup call for us,” said Maonoj from Rajkot.

Bengal were down in the dumps at 66 for five when Washington removed first innings centurion Sudeep trying to cut and in the process being caught by glovesman Narayan Jagadeesan.

Effectively 49 for five with more than 50 overs left, Bengal were in real danger when former India U-19 Shreevats decided to curb his flamboyance.

He found an able ally in Amir Gani (45) as they added 87 runs and more importantly consume around two hours by the time Bengal's chances of what looked like an imminent defeat evaporated.

Once Gani was bowled by R Aushik Srinivas, Shreevats decided to down the shutter as he took bulk of the strike in the next 13 overs during which 15 runs were scored.

Once Shreevats was dismissed trying to cut Srinivas, Bengal were in a position of relative safety with 150 plus lead and very little time left for Tamil Nadu to chase.

The match was called off after the mandatory overs started.

Brief Scores:

Bengal 337 and 196/9 (Shreevats Goswami 61, Amir Gani 45, MS Washington Sundar 3/29)
Tamil Nadu 1st Innings 354 (Dinesh Karthik 80, Krishnamoorthy Vignesh 34 no, Sayan Ghosh 5/123).
