Wriddhiman Saha's gritty innings was the key for India's series win : Sourav Ganguly

Kolkata : Indian wicket keeper Wriddhiman Saha's unbeaten two innings fifty not only got him the Man of the Match prize but is also getting immense appreciation from different quarters. Wriddhiman scored match winning 54 in the first innings and 58 in the second innings in the second Test at Eden Grdens against New Zealand. India not only won the match but won the series as well. Ex-Indian team captain Sourav Ganguly said, "without Wriddhiman's both innings fifty India would have lost the match to New Zealand and they would have levelled the series at Eden Gradens. He performed at a time when in both the occassions the team was in big trouble and he pulled the team out of danger". Lauding Wriddhiman again Sourav also said, "It takes lot of character and metal to play such gritty knocks in a Test match and Wriddhiman has proved himself aptly. To be a succesful Test cricketer time and again one has to play such knocks and it matures a cricketer."

Regarding performing under pressure sourav said, "Wriddhiman is the best Test wicket keeper in the country and there is hardly anyone near him so it plays at the back of the mind and it helped Wriddhi during his performance as he was not feeling that pressuere, i wish him good luck for a bright future ahead".


While Wriddhiman was playing his gritty knocks down the line he touched few records too. Wriddhiman Saha is the 4th Indian wicket keeper who scored fifty in each innings . 54* & 58* vs NZ at Kolkata in 2016. The other three were 1) Mahendra Singh Dhoni - 77 , 74* vs Eng at Barmingham in 2011. 2) Dilawar Hussain - 59 , 57 vs Eng at Calcutta in 1934 and 3) Farrokh Engineer - 121 , 66 at Brabourne Stadium in 1973. Wriddhiman Saha is the 2nd International wicket keeper after Gary Alexander of West Indies who scored not out fifty in both innings. Andy Flower of Zimbawe achived this fifty in both innings 7 time in his carrier . England's Alan Knott achive this fifty in both innings 5 time in his carrier.


India's captain Virat Kohli at the post match presentation appreciating Wriddhiman's achievement said,"Saha was brilliant, he's the best keeper in the country, he's doing a great job in Test cricket. That hundred in West Indies really improved his confidence, he understands how to bat with the tail now".


New Zealand captain Ross Taylor in the post match press conference admitted that Wriddhiman Saha's both innings fifty created the difference between the two teams. Taylor said,"Wriddhiman saha's both innings fifty created the difference between the two teams, both his innings took the match away from us. Our pacers bowled very well and we created pressure on India but saha's batting lead to our defeat in the Test Match".


Elated by her husband's success Wriddhiman's wife Debaroti in a telephonic conversation  said,"i always dreamt of wriddhi playing a test match at Eden Gardens that came true and getting man of the match has added more excitement to it".
