Internet Desk: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has lauded the performances of his bowlers for taking a lead in the five match ODI series against New Zealand at Dharamsala on Sunday.

"It was a fantastic effort from the fast bowlers. We didn't think the pitch will help them this much, they hit the good lengths, especially Hardik, and they bowled well and got regular wickets. Coming to the batting, Virat guided us well after the openers got us off to a fast start," Dhoni said at the post match conference.

The Indian captain had a special word of praise for Hardik Pandya, who had an impressive debut. Pandya took three Kiwi wickets while giving away only 31 runs.

"Hardik's performance is important for us, if he continues to do well, then it will be good for us - going into the future."

Dhoni was critical about the lines Axar Patel and Amit Mishra bowled at. According to Dhoni, "The early wickets helped us, Axar and Mishra were good, but they need to hit consistent lines."

India's ODI captain was in no hurry with the bat as he wanted to spend some quality time in the middle, but was unceremoniously run out after responding to a call for a run from Virat Kohli. He scored only 21 runs.

"I was in no hurry with the bat, I wanted to spend some time, the target wasn't big and I knew I could spend some time in the middle.

India now go 1-0 up in the five-match series and will play the second one-dayer in Delhi on Thursday.
