It was decided at the executive committee meeting of the AIFF in Goa on Monday. The league will comprise of 9 teams with Aizawl FC and Sporting Clube de Goa getting the nod by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
The North East side of Aizawl FC were relegated last season from I League but their impressive show in the Federation Cup this year prompted the AIFF to keep them in the I League. Aizawl FC lost the Federation Cup final 0-5 to Mohun Bagan on May 21. Another club, Sporting Clube de Goa was out of the I League due to the non fulfillment of AFC criteria. But the Goan outfit made its entry back to the I League after having fulfilled all criteria set by Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
The executive committee meeting was chaired by AIFF President Praful Patel. The meeting was also attended by AIFF General Secretary Mr. Kushal Das along with National Coach Mr. Stephen Constantine, AIFF Technical Director Mr. Scott O’Donnell, Mr. Bhaichung Bhutia, Chairman, Technical Committee, Mr. Nicolai Adam, Head Coach, India U-17 World Cup Team, AIFF, Mr. Abhishek Yadav, Director, Scouting, AIFF, Mr. Javier Ceppi, Tournament Director, FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 and Mr. Joy Bhattacharya, Project Director, FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017. Mr. Chirag Tanna and Mr. Rochak Langer representing FSDL attended the Meeting.
The Committee congratulated Bengaluru FC for their performance in the ongoing AFC Cup and wished them luck for the semifinals where they play Malaysia’s Johor Darul Tazim.
Sunando Dhar briefed the Committee about Hero I-League updates which kicks-off on January 7, 2017. The Committee also approved the ‘ISL League Rules 2016’.
The Committee was apprised about National Team updates by National Coach Stephen Constantine and that was followed by Nicolai Adam providing updates about the U-17 World Cup Team.
The overseas online scouting portal launched by AIFF, the first of its kind in India was appreciated by the Committee. Abhishek Yadav further took the Committee a tour on the portal scouting.the-aiff.com.
The new dates for the Santosh Trophy were finalized and the final round will finish by January 10, 2017.
Meanwhile, AIFF’s Annual General Body Meeting for the Elections will be held in December 2016 while the Special General Body Meeting will be held in January 2017.
