Narendra Modi urged Rio bound athletes to make 1.25 Billion people proud

Internet Desk: Wishing good luck to Rio bound athletes of the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged them to do their best and make Indians proud. Today the Prime Minister of India addressed for the nation to join the cheering run - 'Run for Rio' event to show their support for the athletes participating the Rio Olympics.

“You’ll find athletes from all over the world there. But here from India, over 1.25 billion people would be watching for you, cheering you. Make them proud,” said PM.

Today a run to inspire and the support to Rio bound athletes took place at New Delhi which was flagged off by Prime Minister. Nearly 20 thousand people, mainly school students and youths ran from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in this Run for Rio event.

This year 119 athletes will participate in Rio Olympics. Prime Minister today declared that Rs. 125 crore has been spent to send the squad to Rio this year. Money has been allotted for individual athletes. The government is looking after each and every aspect of problem faced by the athletes.

“We allotted special budget for their diet and training this time around,” he said. He also added, "Players were asked where and under whom they like would to be trained, and all arrangements were made accordingly for every selected individual."

Government is spending from Rs. 30 Lakh to Rs. 1.50 crore on a player. Mr. Modi said that care has also been taken to provide good Indian food to the visiting contingent.

Narendra Modi kept faith on the athletes. “Every player has worked hard to get here. They will surely give their best,” he says. “I hope these 119 sports persons will perform well (in the games), and they will be able to win hearts of the people, who come there from different parts of the world, and will make them see what India is,” added Mr. Modi.

He encouraged the youths of India to get prepared for the next Olympic. “India has been associated with the Olympic Games for over 100 years, but only this year we were able to send 119 sports persons to Rio. Our government will do everything to support and prepare sports persons for next 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo,” he said.

Central government has planned that a giant screens will also be put up at the New Delhi’s Central Park starting August 1, along with an exhibition on Rio-bound Athletes.
