Today they have been sentenced for evading €4.1 million tax during 2007-2009. However, they are likely to avoid imprisonment according to the Spanish judiciary system.
Today a Barcelona court ordered the Barcelona and Argentine football star and his father Jorge Horacio Messi for less than two years’ imprisonment. According to the Spanish rule a person receiving a prison sentence less than two years can avoid going to jail. The convicted can spend the time in probation.
The court also ordered Messi to pay €2 million and his father €1.5 million as penalty. However, Messi can further appeal to the Spanish Supreme Court to revise the verdict given by the Barcelona court.
Previously Messi has a bad record of facing fine of millions of Euros due to evading tax in Belize and Uruguay. That time it was the case of concealing earnings from an image right.
However, during the trial of this tax dodging case Messi claimed himself innocent. In the court Messi claimed that he knew nothing of signing for the money he has been accused of cheating the amount of money he has been asked to pay.
Previously he said in the court that he has the bad habit of not properly reading the papers before signing on them. For that reason he does not have the idea how the money has been managed. He has complete trust on his father and the advisers responsible for the management of his earnings. During the trials he repeatedly denied his knowledge of
this fraud. He claimed that he was “worried about playing football” only during the time he has been accused.
