This is a definitely a lifeline for Afridi after Pakistan’s dismal performance in the ongoing Asia Cup. This came in response to speculations about Shahid Afridi’s future as the national T20 captain.
PCB Chief said that the promise they made to Afridi regarding his captaincy till the end of World T20 is to be kept. Despite the clarification, there are still enough reasons for Afridi to be worried about. It clearly seems that the throne still has plenty of thorns in it.
During deliberations on the team’s performance, the majority of the Board insiders felt that the all-rounder was not pulling his weight and the speculations were rife that the PCB might ask Afridi to step down himself so that they can appoint Sarfraz Ahmed in his place for the World T20.
Some of the media reports also circulated stories like the Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis losing his cool with Afridi and other players after Pakistan’s defeat to Bangladesh which saw them crash out of the Asia Cup.
It was also reported that Afridi skipped training before the Bangladesh match. But PCB released an audio message of the head coach from Dhaka in which Waqar squashed the rumours and expressed disappointment over the news being aired on some channels.
Pakistan play their final game against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup tonight. There is a possibility that Afridi could be rested for the game and keeper Sarfraz Ahmed could lead the side.
