Internet Desk : Australia piled more misery against New Zealand on  the second day of the first test at Wellington . The visitors rode on a brilliant century from Adam Voges to  find themselves comfortably placed at 463 for 6 at the stumps of second day’s play  at the Basin Reserve on Saturday.

Voges was unbeaten on 176 at stumps accompanied by Peter Siddle who was  on 29 as the Australians extended their lead to 280 runs. Voges now find his name in the record books , scoring the most runs between two dismissals . Earlier the record was held by Sachin Tendulkar , who scored 487 runs in between two dismissals . But Voges has now scored 551 runs without getting dismissed . If he is not dismissed in Basin Reserve , he will be the first batsman in test cricket to not get dismissed after scoring three unbeaten tons .

The 36-year-old has got a lifeline when Doug Bracewell bowled him for seven with two deliveries left on Friday but the umpire Richard Illingworth saved him by signaling a no ball.

Voges lend solidity to the Australian innings with two solid partnerships,168 with Usman Khawaja (140) and 96 with wicketkeeper Peter Nevill (32) to prevent New Zealand’s comeback in the test match.

New Zealand seemed to have broken the deadlock as Trent Boult took two wickets, including the important one of Khawaja , in three deliveries but Voges had ensured there are no further casualties.

Voges, when he made his debut against West Indies last June at the age of 35, has scored 1,204 runs with high score of 269 not out and an astonishing average of 100.33.

Australia resumed the day on 147-3. Corey Anderson claimed the only other wicket of the day when he forced Nevill to play only to see him to edge behind to make it 395-6.

The way Australia have batted it’s now only their match to lose.In their last two matches at the Wellington ground, they conceded large first innings leads before scoring 680-8 to save a Test against India two years ago and 524-5 to set up a win last year against Sri Lanka.
